June 26 - Valkyrie
I went out fighting
but Valkyries passed me by.
No Valhalla for me
though I lie embraced
with sword in my adversary's guts.
Ah you’d make it, Odin loved a good poet🖤
How do you choose which
Of us is deserving when
We were made to fight?
Curiously enough, being a good poet was a crucial part of being a worthy warrior in Old Norse culture. You can fight, but can you verse?
You can fight, but can you verse?
Is there a meter to your curse?
You may cut as man of action
But do you thrust with lethal scansion?
You are definitely getting into Valhalla with that one😎
'Xactly, it's all about who you know, not who you kill
They play a prominent role in Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle, inspiring one of its most famous instrumental parts.
And the Ring Cycle was inspired by the Saga of the Volsungs, which is a fantastic read.
It was written to please King Ludwig II of Bavaria (Germany hadn't formed yet) who was keen on the old legends.
Wagner’s Ring Cycle was? I didn’t know that, that’s cool!
I lived in Germany a couple years and got the story first hand, touring Bavaria.
Very cool, I’d love to visit Germany.
It was quite an experience, even though my Deutsch isn’t too good (I know how to order food and get a room in a hotel).
Wings of twilight dark,
A warrior's call echoes—
Silent skies tremble.
Valkyrie descends,
Whispers of fallen heroes,
Midnight wind carries.
In frost and fire,
Battle's breath and shadow's sigh,
She reaps silent souls.
Amazing! I think the third is my fave, that middle line is so beautiful🖤
Ride the wind, maiden
Raise your sword in battle fierce
None will stay your path
Awesome imagery, I can feel this🖤
Valiant slain warrior woman and men
Lift heads up to the stars
Valhalla’s bar is now open for business.
Ah, Heiðrún, well researched🖤
Chooser of the slain,
The cold wind blows over me.
Valhalla awaits.
Ah very nice! I love the middle line, what a great detail🖤
Odin's attendants,
Light the way to Valhalla,
Guiding the brave home... 😎
Well done! Such an epic feel and great imagery🖤
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it... 😎
Awesome topic!
