As someone posted above, my first thought was "Strange Fruit" as well. So I'll keep the music theme going but far, far less seriously (forgive me, no offense meant):
Omg, this is serendipity as I once wrote a child like poem of Spooky Mary without even knowing about Mary Webster. Quite similar to your prompt, lovely haiku you wrote. Thank you for the little bits I continually learn from you.
It fits very well, the last line reads either hopeful or sinister to me, which I like.
Also, I used to watch the Monkees on Nickelodeon when I was a kid. Davey really kills those maracas🥰😂
Heck yeah, Monkees on Nickelodeon. Remember it well.
"Southern trees bear a strange fruit/Blood on the leaves, and blood at the roots".
This made me want to listen to The Chariot
“Cause if there’s blood on the leaves, then there’s blood on the branches. Blood on the leaves…”
You guys with the great music recs today, I appreciate it 😊
Yin and yang and life
And death and witch, maybe -
Mary’s suspended.
Hey, I like what you did there with the last line. Lovely double meaning🖤
To and fro in wind
Symbol of man's hate for truth
Shedding single tear
Awesome, I like the single tear. Like that’s all the fucks she’d give ‘em.
Exactly! Well said.
A witch they called her
But she was my weed dealer
Dankest buds in town 😢
A cure for what ails you😌

Mary, think you'd go?
Tell me truly, what's been done?
Girl, it's not over.
Hat tip to The Monkees:

An animation swinging
Back and forth
A deep breath
Of fresh air
Kept her there
To see sunrise.
I really like the stillness in this🖤
Keeps you hanging in anticipation.

Her story is so amazing. She was actually accused of witchcraft again later in life and acquitted then, too.
That is quite interesting. Might have to read up on that.
Had to look up those lyrics and wow. I’m at work so I’ll listen later but that’s powerful.
