Mary Webster was found innocent of witchcraft in 1860, but the townspeople hanged her anyway. Leaving her hanging overnight.

What kept you alive?
In the morning, they found her still alive. She lived another thirteen years and her story inspired author Margaret Atwood.
It fits very well, the last line reads either hopeful or sinister to me, which I like.
Also, I used to watch the Monkees on Nickelodeon when I was a kid. Davey really kills those maracas🥰😂
