It is a strange dichotomy, indeed… imagine Earth being destroyed by Eros. The one in the picture is an artist’s rendering of ʻOumuamua.

Earth being destroyed by Eros would indeed be a surprise and a final blow to nominative determinism. If it were Thanatos on the other hand the allegorists could go to their doom satisfied.
