Bound here forever,

What will become of you, nymph,

When this land is paved?

why not? Nature thirsts for consummation,

a horny landscape no stranger to my fingers.

So soft skin in clear air breeze

Water purified touches nudist delight.

I suck at Haiku…I’ve been weary. But sweet prompt.

Also, “sucking” isn't a bad thing in my book, I’ll rephrase--I struggle at haiku.

How does one improve?

Hello and welcome! I am in no way a stickler for form… or really even content (horror is totally optional). I’m just here for fun and to provide a little creative spark.

If you want to learn about proper haiku form, I wrote a quick rundown of the basics, but again, feel free to toss the rules out the window. Defenestration is awfully fun sometimes😜

I have got a sweet smile on my face knowing you've armed me with information on how to get some haiku on. Can I tell you? THANK YOU.

Hooooo boy! Out of all the poems I've written--which is a lot--I've only done 4 haiku! 4.

Technically speaking, most of the haiku I write are haiku in syllable count only. They COMPLETELY disregard any theme or style elements for the most part. So you’ll get no judgement from me😂 Or really anyone else here, everyone is pretty chill and supportive. We are all about spooky fun (spooky optional😜).

I'm no expert and in fact my haiku probably suck at least most of the time. But here's what I do: empty mind, then think about the theme/prompt. Try to get one - only one - image out of it. You have your image, now express it. Tinker around with the form. I'm not rigorous with syllable count, I just go for 3 short lines.

In general the quicker and more spontaneous it is, the better, IMO.

I also think you've just written the short manual for “How to Write Haiku for Modern Busy Neurodivergent Writers” 💎

I'm also fairly convinced that zen/transcendental meditation can be beneficial for the neurodivergent, though I have no data or anything, not even anecdotal.

Would probably depend on the flavor of neurodivergence as the term covers a pretty broad range of disorders. I’ve never been able to meditate in the traditional sense, ADHD is just not very conducive to it. BUT I would argue that hyper focus on a task, as both ADHD peeps and autists tend to do, is a kind of meditation. It feels that way anyway 🧘

Ohhhhoooo so ZEN! Empty mind you say??

Expand full comment
A.P. Murphy's avatar

That's the one. How I do it anyhow. Practised zen for quite a while, and though I'm not very diligent, I still manage the ol' empty-mind trick when I need it.

It doesn't have to be full-on void-mind though. Just allowing some kind of image to filter in from the main theme will do it.

The easiest way to improve is to just do it - we can always suggest pointers and such.

Haiku has the 5-7-5 syllable format in the traditional sense, but often I see people breaking that (for instance, I did 4-5-5-4 for "Phoenix" the other day).
