The history of scarecrows allegedly dates back to ancient Egyptians defending crops along the Nile.
Your prompt is SCARECROW.
Its straw-stuffed limbs twitch
Ancient sprits animate
The field’s guardian
But the ragged human simulacrum scares all of us, not just crows.
Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote a story called "Feathertop", about a witch who turns a scarecrow into a human being, and the consequences of such. I have to think he was the inspiration for the greatest one in popular culture history: that of "The Wizard of Oz".
Shotgun aimed. Crow blamed.
Placed body on straw hat.
That was that. No more crows.
Corn on cob feast for all.
