Jack Parsons was a crazy guy. That whole period in occult history was really fascinating.
As far as Killer Psyche goes, she walks you through a new case every episode and breaks down the psychological motivation of the killer as she does. You go over the killer’s childhood all through up until their trial. It’s pretty cool. I’m now a pro at spotting narcissists, sociopaths, and psychopaths 😅
I was listening to The Silly Verses on my way home from work today, it has been a go-to. My other favorite is Old Gods of Appalachia. For non-fiction, Arcane Carolinas is fantastic, and very focused on weird stuff in my neck of the woods.
Spooked is my go-to Halloween recommendation, and they just moved off of Luminary and into the kqed roster. It's essentially the scary stories version of Snap Judgment, also hosted by Glynn Washington. It's basically real people talking about inexplicable things that have happened to them; as always, some are more believable than others but even the far-fetched ones are still interesting. The thing I like best about it is the music; there are days when I re-listen to an episode just because I want the vibe I got from that particular episode, if that makes sense.
That is how one of my previous jobs was, I miss it! I could work on restoring antique firearms and listening to audiobooks and podcasts all days. Alas, now my day job is writing and I can't listen to people speaking without it being detrimental to my productivity. 😭
Those are both cool jobs though. I am a lowly receptionist who gets all the boring work that everyone else is too important to do... so I get to listen to podcasts. Cool jobs are better than podcasts, trust me on this.
This is a treasure trove of podcasts! I only have listened to a few of them. Got to check out a few more of the monster ones for sure. I am giving True Crime a rest, went to hard on it for a while. Had to go to rehab.
Omg, so many thoughts. First off, thank you for sharing this wealth of knowledge! I love podcasts but my relationship with listening to them has been hot/cold as of late. So thank you for lighting a fire underneath me!
Secondly - JACK PARSONS! Mad respect for mentioning him. I will follow you anywhere, Yoda.
Lastly, can you recommend a podcast about psychopaths/psychopathy?? "Killer Psyche" sounds pretty close to what I am interested in, especially with a psychiatric nurse on board. But got any podcast recc's with a forensic psychiatrist at the helm? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the suggestions. I've discovered fiction podcasts recently and I love them. Previously, I only listened to dramatized audiobooks (and the regular ones, of course). For me, its visual art - the way you imagine everything while listening is almost weird. I remember how I loved listening to audio fairy tales when I was a kid.
I listened to Shipworm yesterday - they call it an audio movie 😁 - it was interesting.
I'm planning a fiction podcast myself - transforming most of my stories into an audio format. And the monster podcasts will help me with one of my WIPs.
Hey cool! I’m glad you liked the list. Weirdly I never listen to audio books, idk why. But an audio movie sounds interesting, I’ll have to check that out.
I started my Substack about a week ago, so I only have one short story and one audio flash fiction so far (as a podcast). I'll be adding more stories - also the ones I never intended to publish. I'm still not sure about what I want to do with the podcast. We'll see 😁. It's free at the moment - nothing behind the paywall yet. If you interested in sci-fi, you have to listen to Star Wars - it has been dramatized - I think at the time when the first movies were released. It even features Mark Hamill as Luke.
Holy cow, welcome! I dabble in a bit of sci-fi, but Mark Hamill is the goat. Definitely going to give it a listen. Have you visited the Sci-Friday crew yet. @goatfury runs that show, if you haven’t already, you should check it out.

Oo, I’ve heard Old Gods was good. I gotta try that one out.
Looks like you can see how much Substack I sneak on my phone at work with that autocorrect ^
I figured that’s what that was😂 Pretty funny though considering how dark that show is.
Very cool idea for MM!
I don't get much time to listen to podcasts but I'm saving this list.

That sounds really good! Thanks for the suggestion 🖤
I'm partial to Full Body Chills. Great spooky tales. Also Radio Rental, hosted by Rainn Wilson.
Rainn Wilson is great! Thanks for the recommendations.
And the now-defunct Curseland is great. And the first season of Limetown. (We pretend season 2 was a Fever dream)
Oh man, I need all of these in my life. Where do I find the time?? 😓
Lucky for me my day job doesn’t require much brainpower and they don’t care if I’m plugged in all day. 🤷♀️

Oh, I've had my fair share of awful jobs. One that I was not even allowed to listen to podcasts or music. Worse than anything!
One that was particularly bad was a tech support role at a call center. I just so happened to finish training when COVID broke out in China. Yikes.
Oh man, tech support right when the entire globe has to figure out tech🤪 Glad you survived.
I need this list. Thanks.

I tend to get burnt out on true crime, too. That’s part of why I only have these three. I used to listen to more but they can really overwhelm you.

Are you putting your podcast up on Substack?
