It is a little recognized fact that the French occultist, Eliphas Levi (1810-1875), was the first to declare the inverted pentagram "Evil." Until such time, the symbol, inverted or otherwise, was throughout the world seen as a wholesome symbol of luck and protection. The pentagram has symbolized the human body, the elements, the virtues of knights (friendship, generosity, chastity, piety, and courtesy), the five wounds of Christ, The Vault of Heaven, and so much more, but not until Levi turned it on its head, did it come to symbolize the inversion of the natural order, a turning from the spirit to base materialism. That is, turning from God and allowing worldly things, like pleasure and wealth, to rule your life.
