This is based on a true story. In 1995, AOL sent me to NOLA to cover Jazzfest. Walking through the aisle of vendors, I saw the Voodoo Priestess’ booth and excitedly walked over. She looked at me, smiled, and said “You’re the one from AOL. I’ve been waiting for you.” Completely creeped me out. Kid you not.
You do the voodoo
High priestess casts spells to tame
Unruly tresses
Man I wish I’d been able to get my hair done by her. Love this haiku! Makes you wonder…
Laveaux washes hands of st Maroon.
Temps fate, but profit takes
Underground rails track’s hidden
Knocks on wood open doors good luck.
Very cool scene setting here, I want this to be a whole story! So good🖤

OMG!! Read her book decades ago, still recall how stupendous it is .
I’ve definitely added it to my tbr, her website is incredible!
Any hairdresser needs voodoo to contend with MY hair! https://writtentales.substack.com/p/a-memory-of-my-sister
Could only read the first bit, but it’s an intriguing start!
Oh, darn, that’s right. It’s behind the paywall. Bummer.
Both she and voodoo continue to have strong associations with NOLA.
Very true, people leave so many offerings at her grave still.
Hexdoll bright an' cheery
Needle in its eye
I'm sure you'll see the point
Ha! Fantastic! Love the wit in this one🖤
Thanks HG, loved yours too
The voodoo priestess
Said she knew I was coming
And basked in my fear
Oh yeah, that would be chilling. Nice work installing a kind of subtle fear🖤

Ancient rites at dusk,
Her legacy mixed with pain,
Stars weep history.
