Creaking at a crossroads

a special mandrake grows beneath

with power to cancel oaths

and tug out lying tongues of love

Bones whisper secrets,

Hanged for sins never confessed,

Winds mourn Corriveau.

Shadows in the night,

La Corriveau’s ghostly flight,

Moonlit chains rattle.

Legends in the mist,

Her spirit haunts with clenched fists,

Judgment's cruel twist.

Once “ tete a tete” husband number Four

Left pillow talk to feed the horse

Pitchfork pierced no horse sense

Wounds lay deep to rebound .

Cage aux folles buried years tattle tales.

Mythical poetic justice choice; who’s to say? Tales age with loose tongues and language translation.

I have to think that there must have been many other women like her in that situation at that time- and who wouldn't or couldn't resolve it with murder.

Of course, murder is wrong. I understand that unless you’ve been trapped in an abusive marriage with no way out, it’s probably hard to empathize, but systematic abuse was and still is extremely damaging to a person’s psyche. Imagine living never knowing if the next knock to your skull your husband gives you will be the one that kills you. Would you just wait around to find out?

You have to remember that during this time period, divorce wasn’t a thing, women couldn’t own or rent property or get well paying jobs, and it wasn’t illegal to beat your wife. If you were an abused woman, you suffered for your entire life. There was no way out.
