“Paint it black. Black as night.”

Stereophonic Soundtrack from Rolling Stones

Recorded time-warped version spins.

Light everywhere

Then pain and unending dark

Now I only eat

I love this take, anthropomorphizing it makes it so much more horrifying🖤

Flattened choir, rejoice

From a hole in the sky sing

Your hymn to the light

All that falls inside is lost,

lost to time and to fate -

and we're inside one now

though we don't know it

Honeygloom's avatar

So this is what slow annihilation is like? I… have complaints.

A.P. Murphy's avatar

The line "we're inside one now" is actually to be taken literally - the holographic theory has it that the universe is a giant black hole with all our 3D space encoded as a 2D hologram on the outer boundary

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hole_cosmology

Honeygloom's avatar

Ok that is going to take me a while and a few google side quests to read😂 But on the surface my question is, if we’re inside a black hole, wouldn’t our universe be turning into spaghetti? And if so, would it be expanding in two directions and contracting in two directions? As opposed to outward in all? I have a very basic understanding of all this so apologies if I have it all messed up😅

A.P. Murphy's avatar

Short answer: no, because the spaghettification comes when you cross an event horizon (or even before) and not when you're inside where the gravity is - as far as they know - the same everywhere.

As for contracting, this could be a prob for the theory, but maybe not, as black holes evaporate when quantum leakage happens over the event horizon (aka Hawking radiation). This might happen but would be a tiny effect in comparison with existing expansion. And maybe there's nowhere for it to leak into anyway.

But I'm not expert and I'm waiting for my niece to graduate so I can ask her all this stuff. Presently I try to follow PBS Space/Time and Don Lincoln from Fermilabs on YouTube but my brain often melts while doing so.

Honeygloom's avatar

Haha! Also experiencing brain melt this month on a regular basis. 😅

Also the name of a 1979 movie from Disney.

Honeygloom's avatar

Psh, I thought you were joking but no, there really is a Disney movie called Black Hole 🤷‍♀️

David Perlmutter's avatar

That was their attempt to copy "Star Wars" (they didn't own it then and were probably envious of its' box office take.)

Ooo I love this! Normal is not really my scene🖤

Thanks...things get weird at relativistic speeds....😁

Honeygloom's avatar

I am coming to find out this month that nothing is quite as it seems.

erniet's avatar

Ha! Do a month on quantum mechanics!

Wave collapse, the “double-slit” experiment (Feynman said that was the only mystery in physics), Bose-Einstein condensates, quantum entanglement…it makes strange and unusual look mundane…😁

Honeygloom's avatar

I have dabbled, and frequently find I am way in over my head😂

The double slit experiment I’ve seen on YouTube… I really don’t know how these guys sleep at night. Shit that only appears when you look at it? Wtaf 😱

erniet's avatar

It’s not that it appears; it’s that the wave function collapses. It’s the Copenhagen Interpretation…a particle exists in all possible locations and states until you look at it, in which case all the states collapse into that one state…

See? Even weirder thanyou thought!😂
