My dolly squeaked out

a blessing, or maybe a curse -

we'll find out next year.

♾️ Richard Wright

A doll full of grain—

waiting for spring’s warm release,

trapped beneath the frost.

♾️ Sonia Sanchez

Braided spirit laughs,

held tight in a dolly’s weave—

we bury her deep.

♾️ Jack Kerouac

Twisting in my hands,

corn dollies dance on the breeze—

too soon to let go.

♾️ Michael Dylan Welch

Doll of the harvest—

spring will undo your binding,

but will you come back?

♾️ Cor van den Heuvel

Tied too tight again,

corn dollie sits on the shelf—

wind whispers her name.

♾️ Nick Virgilio

Corn dolly forgotten,

her spirit waits for release—

spring comes slowly now.

Cor is, again, my favorite. I put a haiku volume of his on my Amazon list🖤 But I also really like the last one, and for some reason the Kerouac one is chilling to me, idk 😜

I read a lot of his books in college, he definitely resonated, despite most of my professors telling me he wasn’t worth reading (post modernism was all the rage then). You are definitely making me want to reread one or two.

I found a legend from the Haudenosaunee people about a corn husk doll who got conceited and had her face taken away by The Great Spirit?
