Women who followed the god of wine and merriment, Dionysus, the Maenads were known for the wild frenzy of their meetings. Where wine flowed freely and the goal was to reach a state where the soul danced free of the physical form.
Your prompt is MAENADS.
In darkness flames rise
Wine flows hot through frenzied veins
As blood crosses lips
Their rituals are said to have culminated in the slaughter of a bull, whose flesh and blood they would eat and drink raw, symbolically taking in the flesh and blood of Dionysus.
Mother Agave, enraged,
rips off the head of son Pentheus
exiler of maenads, sucks the blood.
Strength and blind fury for this act
both are gifts of the lord of wine.
They say we’re frenzy,
Maddened nurses of our God.
Still they watch us dance.
