“I attended a seance again last night.” August popped up in my office, I was shuffling the tarot deck and watching the neighbor’s house. The one whose previous occupants were murdered by August himself.
“I wondered where you were.”
“Did you have trouble sleeping without me watching you?”
“You watch me sleep?”
“Of course, what on earth would you expect me to do all night?”
“I-” I turned back to the window and said a silent goodbye to sleep. “We’re getting new neighbors.”
“Really? Do they seem respectable?”
“I have no idea what your criteria for respectability are.” I held up a card, he took it from me. I watched it float in his nebulous grip.
“Reversed Son of Wands, I’m not surprised, the psychic at the seance said I should be more adventurous.”
“You spoke to her?” I was shocked, I didn’t think he could communicate with anyone but me.
“I’m sure she was speaking to me, she said, ‘I can feel your presence, come out of shadows and make yourself known. You were once a great man, but something has changed that and now you seek glory again.’ Remarkable, isn’t it?” He beamed, literally, he glowed from somewhere inside his misty body.
“How are you glowing like that?”
“I’m not glowing,” he said matter of factly. “I’m going to go meet the new neighbors.” And then he was gone. I’d go warn them, but, you know…
