“August, we’re going to have a guest today.” We were at the table, eating breakfast. I had drawn the shades to keep the morning sun out.
“And you want me to behave?”
“I want you to be present. The magician, from the circus in Deadwater is coming today to tell us more about Evelyn and how to get to her.” I looked as innocent as I could, I knew he wasn’t going to be happy. He blinked, and licked the back of his hand. He’s been doing random feline things since he possessed that black cat two days ago.
“I will let the cards decide how I behave,” he said, getting up from the table. I had anticipated this, so I had the cards with me. The sound of them shuffling brought him back to the table. He drummed his fingers on the dark-stained wood, glaring down at me.
“You’re quiet this morning,” I said as I shuffled.
“You’ve taken me quite by surprise,” he paused, “I can’t say I like it.” He sat and stopped drumming his fingers to run them through his seaweed green hair. He was in his shirtsleeves and waistcoat again, deep green with gold embroidery. I flipped the card over.
“Seven of Pentacles, reversed.”
“I don’t know that one.” He scowled at me.
“The cards are telling you to stop thinking about how your situation affects you and to think about what it’s doing to others.” I slid the card across the table to him. He looked at me, a wild grin spreading across his face. He started to laugh so hard he flickered. Salt water tears streamed down his face. I stood up and grabbed the salt shaker. I sprinkled it on his head.
“What! Oh, owww!” He screamed as the salt crystals burned his translucent skull. I walked out of the room, his screams echoing through the house.
