“Oh. Oh my, is that what I think it is?” August pointed to the card in my hand. He’s taken to wearing broad stripes lately and had on a mauve and sky blue suit that was giving me a headache.
“Yes,” I moaned. The Father of Wands reversed.
“Well, guess who can’t call their hero magician?”
“Go away. That suit, I can’t even.” The walls began to bleed mauve and sky blue paint in thick gloopy ribbons. The colors ran and pooled on the floor in grotesque puddles. I squeezed my eyes closed. I counted to ten. When I opened my eyes August was gone and so was the paint.

My agent emailed me today and asked when I was getting a new phone. I picked up the old one and powered it on. It actually worked. I called and said I already had- same number. I sent a quick text to Mal. I had already emailed my realtor and told her I just wanted to sell the house as is. Forget the contractor, I don’t care if I get less money. I don’t care if I get no money. I’ll gift the house to a stranger. I just need to get out of here.
Then I went to look for August. I found him in the living room resting on a chaise lounge, a dead squirrel lay across his barely visible chest. I sat at the coffee table and shuffled and pulled his card, the Two of Pentacles reversed. Good to know he’s over doing it, I guess. I left the card covering the poor squirrel’s face, hoping it prompted August to torment me less in the name of balance.

August wasn’t around today so I pulled my own card instead, The Star. Hope? I was doubtful until my phone chimed with a response from Mal. He said it was likely Evelyn was somehow influencing August. That would explain the inconsistency of his power. He was in New York, though, and couldn’t help me, but gave me the number of another demon and he promised to check in later. And my realtor found a buyer. They’ll even take the house furnished.
